Ukraine Must Implement its Commitments on Minority Rights

Viktória Ferenc, a member of the European Parliament representing Fidesz-KDNP, called on Ukraine to fully restore the minority rights of Transcarpathian Hungarians and other minority groups. She emphasized that Ukraine must implement its commitments regarding minority rights. During a recent EU-Ukraine Association Committee meeting, Ferenc expressed concerns about a proposed amendment to Ukraine’s education law (Bill No. 12086), which aims to enforce the exclusive use of the Ukrainian language in educational institutions, potentially violating basic human rights and restricting minority languages.

The amendment would limit the use of minority languages, including Hungarian, to classroom activities, mandating Ukrainian for communication during breaks, in teacher lounges, and on school premises.

While Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Sztefanisina reassured that the Ukrainian parliament closely monitors initiatives related to EU accession and stated that such restrictive proposals have not been incorporated into governmental legislation, Ferenc stressed the need for legal measures to fully restore minority rights. She urged constructive collaboration between the Ukrainian government and minority representatives to achieve this goal.
