On September 2, a special school year opening ceremony took place in Bácskossuthfalva, symbolizing the unity and future of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina, Serbia. The event was organized by the minority’s Hungarian National Council (MNT), emphasizing the importance of native language education for the survival of the Hungarian community.
The event was opened by Dr. Gábor Crnkovity, the principal of the Id. Gyula Kovács Elementary School.
The community is united in defending every Hungarian student and every Hungarian class, including those with small numbers. Despite the legal minimum of 15 students, classes can be opened with as few as five, or even fewer. He emphasized the vital role that teachers, educators, and school leadership play. “It is highly significant that you can begin your studies in such a beautiful environment, within the walls of the Id. Gyula Kovács Elementary School. Schools like this are available throughout Vojvodina,” he said.
Today in Vojvodina, 10,242 children study in Hungarian in 74 elementary schools and four special schools, including 1,313 first-grade students.
At the event, school supply packages were distributed to first-grade students to help ease their integration into Hungarian-language education. Dr. Bálint Pásztor, president of the Alliance of Hungarians in Vojvodina, emphasized that without the support of the MNT and the Hungarian government, Hungarian education in Vojvodina would face significant challenges.
This solemn moment reminds us all that language is not just a tool for communication but the foundation of our shared future. Through the preservation and nurturing of the mother tongue, the Hungarian community in Vojvodina will continue to thrive, educating new generations to serve the community.
