For the first time since her election as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Viktória Ferenc visited Subcarpathia, her native land, on September 7. In Salank/Shalanky, she attended the joint opening day ceremony for Hungarian-language schools in the province. Later, she met with leaders of Hungarian organizations, churches, and mayors at the Rákóczi College in Beregszász/Berehove. The meeting, moderated by Prof. Dr. István Csernicskó, Rector of the college, covered various topics, including education, the situation of local governments, and environmental issues.
After the meeting, MEP Ferenc told the press: “Thanks to the Fidesz-KDNP national list and the support of the Cultural Alliance of Hungarians in Subcarpathia (KMKSZ), I was elected as a representative in the European Parliament. Therefore, it is fundamentally important for me to maintain direct contact with the legitimate representatives of the Hungarian community in this Ukrainian province and to learn about the issues that need to be resolved on their behalf. Today’s event was organized so that I could meet both familiar and lesser-known leaders to hear about their concerns. We discussed education and environmental protection, which are also important priorities for me in the European Parliament. After gaining invaluable insights, I will return to Brussels to help address the real issues facing the Hungarian community in Subcarpathia. Over the next five years, Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will be on the agenda.I consider it crucial that the rights of national minorities in the country are guaranteed in line with the Copenhagen criteria,” emphasized the MEP, who promised to maintain regular contact and make frequent visits to Subcarpathia.
The meeting was attended by József Sin, Vice President of KMKSZ, who underscored: “I believe today’s meeting was very useful. Among the more than two dozen participants, everyone shared their ideas, suggestions, and views on how they see potential cooperation with the MEP. Viktória Ferenc took detailed notes, and I hope she will be able to use this information in her work. There is plenty of work to be done, and we were pleased to hear that the MEP has expressed her commitment to supporting the Hungarian community’s struggles,” said the Vice President.
