An important outcomes of the July 2, 2024 meeting in Kyiv between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was consensus to open a Ukrainian-language school in Hungary. President Zelensky stated, “We specifically discussed the opening of the first Ukrainian school in Hungary, and the Prime Minister assured me that he would support the project.” Viktor Orbán confirmed his full support for the Ukrainian initiative and emphasized that the increased educational needs of Ukrainian refugees necessitated the creation of such a school.
“Ukrainians have lived in Hungary before, but now there are a series of additional needs that must be taken care of… That is why I was very pleased with the presidential initiative to open a Ukrainian school in Hungary,” Orbán said. He explained that currently, Ukrainian children in Budapest attend various schools, and while the system is “not bad,” Hungary understands the need for a Ukrainian-language school.
“We don’t just understand this need. The Hungarian state will finance this school. As many Ukrainian schools will open as needed. It is important for us that Ukrainians feel at home in Hungary,” Orbán added.
Following the talks in Kyiv, Zelensky and Orbán also agreed to work on a bilateral agreement focusing on the needs of the Hungarian-speaking minority living in Subcarpathia.
