In a July 4 Magyar Nemzet interview, László Brenzovics, President of the Cultural Alliance of Hungarians in Sub-Carpathia (KMKSZ), called the Hungarian prime minister’s visit to Kyiv “courageous.” Brenzovics emphasized that establishing peace and ensuring Hungarian-language educational opportunities from the kindergarten level through university is of paramount importance for his community.
“We would like to encourage Hungarian-language education to be available from the kindergarten level through university, and use the Hungarian language freely in all areas of life. We want to be able to enjoy the rights that we had before 2014,” stated the leader of Ukraine’s Hungarian minority.
He emphasized that Ukraine needs to address these issues within the framework of the EU accession agreement and that a new bilateral agreement is necessary to guarantee the rights of Hungarians in Sub-Carpathia.
István Dobsa, President of the KMKSZ Youth Organization, noted that despite the war, Sub-Carpathia remains an “island of peace” in Ukraine and that the Hungarians of the province are more a resource for Ukrainians than a problem or a national security risk. He highlighted that the Hungarian government consistently supports minority rights and described Hungary’s humanitarian aid as historically significant.
