AUR Extremist Romanian Campaign Promises Include Closing Hungarian-Language Schools in Cluj/Kolozsvár

On May 29, 2024, Alin Coleșa, the parliamentary representative for Cluj County from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) political party, announced plans to shut down Hungarian schools in the Transylvanian capital city of Cluj should the party gain power. Disregarding the law and Romania’s international commitments to the right to native-language education, the AUR leader falsely labels the right as “segregation” that hinders so-called “multiculturalism.”  The proposals evoke the days when ultra-nationalist Gheorghe Funar was mayor of the city in the 1990s. In response, the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) is urging the Hungarian community to come out and vote on June 9 and prevent such ant-minority measures from coming to pass.
