The traditionally peaceful atmosphere of the Nagykároly/Carei Christmas market was marred by an anti-Hungarian provocation when a man spat on and verbally abused a chimney cake vendor from the Székely Region. The incident sparked widespread outrage within the local community.

On December 21, 2025, two anti-Hungarian incidents took place at the Nagykároly/Carei Christmas market. A man not only spat on a chimney cake vendor who had arrived from Székelyföld, but, in an agitated state, also disrupted the program of a Santa Claus Train arriving from Hungary, thereby spoiling the festive experience for children.

In an official statement, the local branch of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) condemned the events, emphasizing that a Christmas market should serve as a peaceful meeting place for different communities, and that actions such as incitement or humiliation have no place whatsoever—neither in Nagykároly/Carei nor in other places during the holiday season.

RMDSZ representatives from Szatmár/Satu Mare County also addressed the issue in the Romanian Parliament in Bucharest, stressing that the incident was not merely an isolated insult but “a symptom of the growing prevalence of hate speech and chauvinism.” According to them, such incidents not only violate the dignity of the individual targeted, but also undermine the peaceful coexistence of the Hungarian and Romanian communities.
