The Hungarian Government Approves Recommendations of the Hungarian–Croatian Minority Joint Committee

The Government of Hungary has officially approved the recommendations adopted at the XVIIth session of the Hungarian–Croatian Intergovernmental Minority Joint Committee (MJC), held in Zagreb on April 9, 2025. The decision [Government Resolution 1283/2025. (VIII. 5.)]  marks another milestone in the exemplary cooperation between the two countries in the area of minority protection.

The primary aim of the MJC’s sessions is to formulate concrete proposals to improve the situation of the Croatian community in Hungary and the Hungarian community in Croatia, while supporting their cultural, educational, and religious lives.

Particularly welcome for the Hungarian community in Croatia is the emphasis placed on specific development needs in Hungarian-inhabited areas. The document also addresses the strengthening of cooperation between minority communities of both countries, with a special focus on youth, education, culture, and religion.

At the same time, the Hungarian government requested the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade to officially notify the Croatian counterpart and the Hungarian section of the Joint Committee. For the Hungarian community in Croatia, this decision represents not only continued attention and support but also greater security and predictability. Past experience shows that MJC recommendations can lead to tangible results when paired with strong political will and partnership.

“With this approval, bilateral minority protection cooperation gains new momentum, and our community can continue to rely on Hungary’s support in preserving its identity, culture, and institutions. I have been informed that the Croatian government will also place the adoption and implementation of these recommendations on its agenda by the end of August,” stated Robert Jankovics, Member of Parliament and President of the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Croatia (HMDK).
