The Croatian government, in collaboration with representatives of the country’s national minorities, has developed an operational program aimed at supporting the preservation of these communities and clearly defining their priorities for the coming period. The segment of the program concerning the Hungarian minority was shaped based on recommendations from the Democratic Community of Hungarians in Croatia (HMDK).

On June 13, 2024, the Croatian government adopted a decision to draft national minority operational programs for the 2024-2028 period, which was later approved by the cabinet. The new program focuses on the preservation and support of national minorities, defining a total of 209 activities, of which 56 apply to all national minorities, and 153 are tailored to the specific needs of different ethnic groups. The program was designed with input from the HMDK to ensure the development and sustainability of the Hungarian community in Croatia.

Jankovics Róbert, the parliamentary representative of the Hungarian minority in Croatia, highlighted that the operational plan is a significant opportunity to address the most pressing needs of the community. He emphasized the importance of the Croatian government’s partnership and commitment to considering the needs of the Hungarian minority.

The program for the 2024-2028 period includes sustained funding for key Hungarian associations and institutions, the construction and equipping of an educational and sports hall at the Kórógy Elementary School, and the renovation and equipping of the Hungarian Educational and Cultural Center in Eszék. Additionally, it supports the renovation of several sacred buildings and ensures the legal and financial conditions for implementing the recommendations of the Croatian-Hungarian Joint Governmental Commission on the mutual protection of national minorities.
