The Alliance of Hungarians in Vojvodina Successful in Serbian Local Elections

The Alliance of Hungarians in Vojvodina (VMSZ) achieved significant success in the Serbian municipality elections on June 2, 2024. Bálint Pásztor, president of VMSZ, announced that his party maintained its leading position and remains the number one political force in Bačka Topola /Topolya, Opština Senta /Zenta, and Opština Kanjiža /Magyarkanizsa. In Topolya and Magyarkanizsa, it secured an absolute majority and, in Zenta, they nearly achieved the same result. 

The Serbian Progressive Party (SZHP) also performed successfully in the elections, except in four municipalities where the VMSZ won. In Belgrade, the SZHP won with 52% of the votes. The turnout was 37.71%. 

In Topolya, the VMSZ won with a significant lead, receiving 7,772 votes, thereby securing 19 seats in the 35-member local council. The SZHP received 13 seats, while the Tomorrow Topolya list received 3 seats.
