Panel Discussion on Election Results and Opportunities for Hungarian Minority Youth in Countries South of Hungary

Leaders from ethnic Hungarian communities in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia gathered on July 4 at the annual Vojvodina Summer University located in Mali Idos/Kishegyes, Vojvodona Province, Serbia.

Dušan Orban, Chairman of the Council of the Hungarian National Self-Government Community of  the Mura Region (Slovenia)emphasized how the event is an excellent platform for all-important inter-community communication.  Despite their small numbers, the Hungarians of Muravidék are able to preserve their cultural values through constitutional rights.

During the panel discussion,  Dr. Bálint Pásztor, president the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) recounted their election success resulting in continued community representation at the local, provincial and national levels. Opportunities and support for young people in Vojvodina were presented, to help them them thrive in their local communities.

The discussion also included Bálint Juhász, President of the Vojvodina Provincial Assembly, and Róbert Jankovics, President of the Democratic Community of Hungarians in Croatia.

Pásztor emphasized commonality in institutions and goals between the three communities bordering the south of Hungary. Present also was Hungarian State Secretary for National Policy, Árpád János Potápi, who applauded the contribution summer universities make to strengthening vibrant connections between various segments of the Hungarian nation.

“It’s good to see that although we live in different regions, we are still citizens of the Carpathian Basin, sharing a common historical background and goals we want to achieve. We can rely on each other, and unless we stick together  , we will not  strengthen in politics or other areas,” said Potápi.
