At the March 11, 2026 meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Romanian Parliament, Social Democratic MP Adrian Câciu made chauvinistic remarks toward the chair of the meeting, Gábor Hajdu of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ). The incident, which sparked outrage among the Hungarian community in Transylvania, will be brought before the National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD).

A complaint has been filed with the CNCD against Adrian Câciu by Iulian Lőrincz, a Brașov County MP from the Save Romania Union (USR) party. “In the Foreign Affairs Committee I witnessed scenes that have no place in the parliament of a European country. Personal insults. Abuse. And clearly xenophobic messages,” Lőrincz wrote in a Facebook post.

The PSD politician told his colleague from RMDSZ that “you do not understand what it means to be Romanian, and you should not even have the right to speak at that microphone.”

Iulian Lőrincz noted that according to Câciu’s extremist views, the right to speak depends on one’s ethnic background or origin, which is why he submitted a complaint to the CNCD.

“I firmly condemn every xenophobic, racist, or discriminatory message—regardless of who says it and regardless of whom it is directed against. Romania is a country that has also been built by minorities. It is a country where millions of citizens live in the diaspora and ask for respect in other states. We cannot demand respect for Romanians in Europe if we tolerate xenophobia at home.”
He added that while tough debate can take place in parliament, there is a line that must not be crossed: the line of hatred. “Respect for people, minorities, and the rule of law is not optional. It is the foundation of a democratic society,” the USR MP stated.

The Mikó Imre Legal Defense Service has also taken action in the case. “We are turning to the Chamber of Deputies’ committee dealing with abuses, to the president of the PSD, and to the leader of the PSD parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies regarding the anti-Hungarian incident that occurred in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Romanian Parliament’s lower house. We consider it important that the committee reprimand Adrian Câciu, and we also request that the PSD make it clear within its party forums that this behavior is unacceptable. As a governing party, the PSD bears particular responsibility in shaping public discourse,” the legal rights organization said.

The RMDSZ also reacted to the incident. “No one can question the right of the Hungarian community to speak, express its opinion, and represent itself in parliament,” the Hungarian alliance stated in its position.

For the sake of completeness, it should also be noted that one day after the incident, Câciu’s own party, the PSD, also strongly condemned the MP’s remarks.
