A newly-stablished civic initiative platform — KÖZ.ÜGY (Public Matters) — has called for a major demonstration on January 30, 2026, to protest the continued use of the Beneš Decrees in modern-day Slovakia. The rally, scheduled to take place in the historic Main Square of Bratislava’s/ Pozsony Old Town, will address what activists call an “absurd and discriminatory” legal environment. The movement focuses on two primary issues: the ongoing state-sponsored seizure of lands from ethnic Hungarians and Germans based on the principle of collective guilt, and the recent Criminal Code amendment—often dubbed “Lex Beneš”—which threatens those who criticize these historical decrees with up to six months of imprisonment.

Through a viral video appeal, the platform’s leaders emphasized that their mission transcends ethnic lines, calling on all citizens who value the rule of law and freedom of speech to join the cause. “We must demonstrate that being Hungarian is not a crime against the state,” they declared, challenging the government’s narrative.
