Kelemen Hunor, President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), announced on June 22 that the alliance will continue its role in the Romanian government as part of the newly formed four-party coalition in Bucharest. The coalition the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Save Romania Union (USR), and the parliamentary group representing non-Hungarian national minorities. For RMDSZ, this move marks not only a political return but also a strategic challenge amid Romania’s serious fiscal problems.
Kelemen Hunor’s Message: Defending the Community, Governing Responsibly
In a video message posted on social media, the leader of the party representing the interests of Romania’s 1.1 million ethnic Hungarian minority, emphasized that RMDSZ is taking on a governmental role after a difficult period, fully aware that the coming months will be equally challenging. Due to overspending in 2024, the country is facing significant public debt and a large budget deficit, which will require structural reforms.
“We need a slimming down of the state, and we must protect our community,” Kelemen said, adding that the cost of the crisis must be borne by the bloated state institutions rather than the citizens.
Government Roles and Political Responsibilities
RMDSZ will hold three key positions in the new government led by Ilie Bolojan:
Minister of Development: Cseke Attila will continue in this role
Minister of Culture: Demeter András has been nominated
Deputy Prime Minister without portfolio: Tánczos Barna will assume this position
Vote of Confidence in Parliament: A Solid Majority
At the joint session of Romania’s bicameral parliament on Monday, June 23, the Bolojan cabinet received 301 votes of confidence, far exceeding the required 233 votes. The opposition largely boycotted the vote—only nine lawmakers voted against the new government.
Vision for the Future: Consolidating Achievements
Kelemen Hunor stressed that RMDSZ’s mandate includes not only representing the Hungarian community but also taking responsibility for effective governance.
“We must create a situation where all we have achieved in recent years cannot be reversed,” he stated.
