On Friday, June 13, 2025, the Sfântu Gheorghe/Sepsiszentgyörgy City Hall received a disturbing phone call from Germany. An unknown caller issued death threats not only against the municipality’s employees but also to their families — confirmed Deputy Mayor Éva Sztakics.
The incident came shortly after two provocateurs affiliated with AUR, Romania’s far-right nationalist party, stormed city hall in late May. The men, from distant Constanța, aggressively interrogated staff about the alleged absence of the Romanian flag, questioned the demolition of the Bodok Hotel, denied that the Székely Region where the town is located even exists.
When city manager Barna István Jakab tried to escort them out, they became physically abusive and recorded the confrontation with their cellphones. Misleading footage was later edited and uploaded online.
The threatening call, received on June 13, referred specifically to this manipulated video. The caller, phoning from a German number and claiming to represent an embassy, demanded to speak with the “young mayor.” When connected to the mayor’s office, the man immediately began to threaten:
“You are servants of the people. You will all be arrested and shot — you and your families!”
Deputy Mayor Sztakics clarified that neither the mayor nor a journalist appears in the video, contrary to the caller’s claim, rather it shows the city manager and the two agitators.
In response, the City Hall filed two criminal complaints:
Against Marian Saioc and his associate, for the physical and verbal harassment in May.
Against the unknown caller for the death threats made on June 13.
Sztakics added: “There is a growing wave of provocations and threats. Staff are scared. The mood is tense.”
Several other municipal offices in the Székely region have reportedly been harassed by AUR sympathizers in recent weeks, with authorities occasionally siding with the provocateurs.
This escalating situation shows that political extremism now poses a direct threat to public safety, not just to democratic discourse.
