Ethnic Hungarian Expert to Represent Romania on the EU Fundamental Rights Agency’s Management Board

An ethnic Hungarian expert, Zsolt Molnár, has been appointed to represent Romania on the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). The Romanian government approved the memorandum confirming his appointment on April 9, 2025. Alongside Molnár, Ciprian Ioniță has been appointed as an alternate member.

The FRA’s Management Board is composed of individuals with outstanding knowledge of fundamental rights and experience in managing public or private sector organizations. Romania’s previous representatives’ mandates expired on January 6.

Zsolt Molnár has been an active figure in Romanian public life and minority rights advocacy for many years. From 2012 to 2016, he served as a Member of Parliament for Timiș/Temes County, representing the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ). In 2017, he became a senior advisor to the Prime Minister, and since April 2018, he has served as a deputy ombudsman. In his current role at the Office of the People’s Advocate, he is responsible for general human rights, gender equality, minority rights, and religious rights.

Molnár’s appointment is a recognition not only of his professional experience but also of his commitment to minority communities. His participation in the FRA provides an opportunity for the perspectives of Romania’s minorities – including the Hungarian community – to be represented in EU-level fundamental rights decision-making. This is particularly significant in today’s Europe, where fundamental and minority rights are increasingly at the forefront of public discourse.
