Ministry of Human and Minority Rights in Serbia  Condemns Statements by the Mayor of Subotica/Szabadka

The Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue strongly condemned statements made by Stevan Bakić, the Mayor of Subotica/Szabadka, during the 15th Banija Preló event held on January 25. According to the ministry’s statement, the politician’s words were not only offensive but also escalated ethnic tensions, particularly against the Croatian minority in Serbia.

The official statement emphasizes that any public expression that incites discrimination, intolerance, or ethnic-based tension should be considered a form of hate speech. The ministry specifically highlighted that such behavior is especially unacceptable from a public figure whose role should be to promote social peace and tolerance.

Consequences of the Statements
In his response to student protests at the event, Mayor Bakić said: “Unfortunately, it turns out that the Ustaše have attacked our Serbia again” and that “the Croatian intelligence service  is behind all these events.” These remarks sparked outrage and were sharply criticized by leaders of the country’s Croatian minority.
According to the ministry, such pronouncements undermine interethnic relations in Serbia and negatively impact Serbian-Croatian diplomatic relations. Political leaders and the media should refrain from incendiary rhetoric and spreading unfounded claims, they added.

Appeal for Responsible Communication
The ministry further asked the authorities and relevant institutions to investigate the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable laws if necessary. “It is the responsibility of every official to promote the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation among all citizens of Serbia,” the statement said.
