Várhelyi Olivér: Ukraine has met the necessary requirements to start accession negotiations

Oliver Várhelyi, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, stated that despite the current challenging geopolitical situation, Ukraine has successfully fulfilled the fundamental requirements necessary to begin accession negotiations with the EU.

During the press conference held on Tuesday, Várhelyi emphasized that Ukraine’s reform measures aim to strengthen the rule of law, ensure judicial independence, and combat corruption. The European Commission will closely monitor Ukraine’s progress in the integration process, regularly reporting to the EU Council.

Hadja Lahbib, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium and current President of the EU Council, highlighted that further reforms are expected from Ukraine. She underscored that the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement forms the basis for close cooperation between the EU and Ukraine.

Leaders of EU institutions equally emphasized the importance for Ukraine to continue respecting European values, including the protection of human rights and minority rights.

With the start of accession negotiations, the European Union sends a strong signal not only to Ukraine but also towards Moldova, reinforcing the importance of Eastern Neighborhood Policy and promoting peace, security, and economic prosperity across the European continent.
