“The Ukrainian government has stopped publishing Hungarian school books, made drastic reductions in Hungarian mother tongue and foreign-language classes in elementary schools, and has been undermining the Petőfi Scholarship Program in Subcarpathia,” said the Hungarian Subcarpathian Teachers Association (KMPSZ) leadership on November 20th. They also expressed concerns over inaction by the government to reverse unfavorable changes made to the Law on Education. “Half a year has passed since Ukraine elected a new president, and more than a hundred days have passed since our country has a new parliament and government, but no positive changes have been made to fully reinstate Hungarian-language education,” add the statement. Relying on the recommendations of the Venice Commission, the organization has turned to Ministry of Education with the details of the problems and proposed solutions.
